Tunisia Becomes Regional Leader in the Mediterranean by Assuming the Presidency of the WestMED "Blue Skills" Technical Group
Tunisia has taken on a strategic role in developing sustainable maritime economy and talent in the sector by assuming the presidency of the WestMED "Blue Skills" Technical Group.
Background
During the fifth annual WestMED conference, held in late November 2025 in Tunis, representatives from Western Mediterranean countries validated the creation of a technical group dedicated to "Blue Skills". This initiative aims to strengthen training, expertise, and employment in maritime sectors, ranging from fishing and aquaculture to coastal tourism, port logistics, and marine renewable energies.
Tunisia's New Role
Tunisia was designated to preside over this group in recognition of its constant efforts to develop maritime and coastal human capital. Official work will begin in February 2026, with the participation of international experts, to define common standards and structure a regional roadmap for the blue economy.
National Impact
At the national level, this presidency is a real opportunity to strengthen training programs, modernize skills, and promote the integration of young people into maritime professions. Seminars and partnerships have already been established to align educational programs with international standards and stimulate innovation in the sector.
Regional Cooperation
Beyond prestige, this role places Tunisia at the center of a Mediterranean cooperation network, enabling the country to:
- Impulse transnational initiatives
- Foster talent mobility
- Promote sustainable, inclusive, and resilient maritime development
Strategic Response to Environmental Challenges
In the face of growing environmental challenges, the exponential growth of the blue economy represents a strategic response for the future, both in the medium and long term. By taking the helm of the WestMED "Blue Skills" Technical Group, Tunisia affirms and solidifies its willingness to be a key player in a greener, more innovative, and more prosperous Mediterranean.
