US and China Confirm Details of Rare Minerals Export Deal

The United States and China have confirmed the details of a trade framework that will allow for the export of rare minerals and ease technological restrictions, according to a statement released yesterday by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. The Asian giant will examine and approve export requests for items subject to export control rules, while the US will cancel a series of restrictive measures imposed on Beijing.

This announcement comes after US President Donald Trump declared, a day earlier, that his country had reached an agreement with China. The White House later clarified that Washington and Beijing had agreed on an additional agreement on a framework for implementing the Geneva agreement.

Earlier this month, the negotiating teams of both parties, led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, reached an agreement on implementing the consensus reached in Switzerland, two days after high-level talks in London.

The London agreement stabilized what had become a tense relationship, with the US accusing China of delaying the easing of restrictions on rare minerals and China criticizing US restrictions on technology and the revocation of student visas.

Now, reaching a similar agreement with the European Union seems more complicated. With China, rare minerals were considered a crucial bargaining chip in the negotiations. But with Brussels, things are quite different.
