Tunisia to Introduce Biometric ID Cards and Passports
Imed Mamacha, spokesperson for the General Directorate of National Security, revealed on Mosaïque FM that Tunisia is preparing to adopt biometric ID cards and passports, a project approved by the Assembly of People's Representatives (ARP) in March 2024.
Simplified Personal Information
The new biometric ID cards will no longer include the holder's profession, simplifying personal information. Meanwhile, the passport will undergo significant changes, including a color change and compliance with international standards.
Enhanced Security and Efficiency
The integration of an electronic chip containing all the holder's data will significantly enhance the security and efficiency of the identification system.
Preparatory Phase
The project is currently in its preparatory phase, which includes:
- Developing a specification document
- Acquiring specific equipment to ensure compliance with international standards
Regulatory Framework
Decrees and circulars are being prepared to define the usage modalities of these new documents.
Simplified Application Process
Citizens will be able to book an appointment online via a dedicated platform on the Ministry of Interior's website to obtain their new documents. The fiscal stamp will also be available online, simplifying the administrative process.
Validity Period
The validity period of the new passports will be extended to 10 years, while passports for children under 15 will be valid for 5 years.
Implementation Timeline
The preparatory phase includes acquiring equipment for the concerned directorates, followed by a 3-month pre-normative phase to test prototypes in all governorates. A 6-month normative phase will then ensure the conformity and efficiency of the new documents. The project is expected to be deployed in the second half of 2025.
Current Passports Remain Valid
Current passports will remain valid, but those that have expired will need to be renewed.
