Tunisia Aims to Boost Electric Mobility to Reduce Energy Consumption in Transportation Sector
The Secretary of State for Energy Transition, Wael Chouchane, emphasized the importance of electric mobility in reducing energy consumption in Tunisia's transportation sector. During a workshop held on September 17 in Tunis, he highlighted that transportation is the primary energy consumer in the country, accounting for one-third of final energy consumption and over 50% of petroleum product consumption. Moreover, it is the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Government Measures to Promote Electric Mobility
To address these challenges, the government has implemented several measures to promote electric mobility, including:
- Total exemption from customs duties
- Reduction of Value-Added Tax (VAT)
- Reduction of registration and circulation fees
Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
In parallel, 80 electric vehicle charging stations are being installed across the country in partnership with municipalities.
Training Programs for Professionals
The government is also working to train professionals in the sector. Training programs are underway in industrial technical centers, such as the Technical Center for Mechanical and Electrical Industries.
Integration of Electric Vehicle Charging into Education and Training
These initiatives aim to integrate the profession of electric vehicle charging into the education and training system.
Development of Tunisian Standards for Electric Vehicle Charging Points
In collaboration with the National Agency for Energy Management and the National Institute for Standardization and Industrial Property, the ministry is developing Tunisian standards for electric vehicle charging points.
Classification of Electric Vehicle Charging Activities
The activity of electric vehicle charging will also be added to the classification system of activities in Tunisia, in partnership with the National Institute of Statistics.
