Ministry of Transport Aims to Accelerate GPS Geolocation System in Bizerte Regional Transport Company
The Ministry of Transport wants to accelerate the implementation of the GPS geolocation system within the Bizerte Regional Transport Company to improve fleet tracking and enforce speed limit controls in real-time.
Key Decisions
This orientation is among the main decisions announced after the visit made by the Minister of Transport, Rachid Amri, to the governorate of Bizerte on June 17. The visit aimed to evaluate the functioning of several structures related to the transport sector and monitor the progress of ongoing projects in the region.
Regarding the Bizerte Regional Transport Company, the minister requested the acceleration of the integration of different modules of the company's information system to improve management and decision-making. He also emphasized the use of the GPS system to ensure instant tracking of vehicles, particularly in terms of compliance with the maximum authorized speed.
Enhancing Transport Capabilities
Beyond the digital aspect, the ministry plans to gradually strengthen the region's transport capabilities. The minister confirmed that Bizerte will benefit from a share of the 461 new buses acquired under a first national order. A second batch of 621 buses is also planned to continue renewing the fleet and improving services to different areas of the governorate, particularly for school and university transportation.
Other Measures
Other measures announced for the regional transport company include:
- Accelerating procedures for the final withdrawal of retired buses before the end of June 2026
- Improving working conditions in maintenance workshops
- Recruiting new technical agents and drivers
Focus on Transport Infrastructure
During the visit, the minister also addressed several files related to transport infrastructure. At the Bizerte land transport station, he called for accelerating the site redevelopment project, improving working conditions for agents, and studying the possibility of setting up a dedicated space for collective taxis ("louages").
At the Bizerte commercial port, recommendations include:
- Installing signage for containers
- Gradually digitizing their management
- Cleaning port areas
- Maintaining the railway line serving the port
Rail Transport
Regarding rail transport, the ministry requested several interventions to facilitate freight transport by rail. One of the main decisions concerns the connection of a 1.8-kilometer rail section to the Bizerte cement plant, with the aim of commissioning it at the beginning of 2027. Cleaning and maintenance work are also planned on several rail sections used by the region's industries.
Objective
Through these measures, the ministry aims to improve the quality of transport services in the governorate of Bizerte while accelerating the modernization of infrastructure and the digitization of network management.
