At the beginning of 2026, France ranks second in the world for countries most affected by data breaches, with 23.5 million compromised accounts, just behind the United States (60.3 million). This is according to the latest quarterly study published by Surfshark, a specialist in cybersecurity and VPN solutions.

In total, nearly 23.7 billion accounts are estimated to have been hacked worldwide since 2004, including approximately 7.9 billion unique email addresses. This means that globally:
- A single email address is compromised on average around 3 times.
- 95 unique email addresses are affected for every 100 people.
- 287 accounts are compromised for every 100 people on average.
