Tunisia's Dahar Geopark Joins UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network

The Permanent Delegate of Tunisia to UNESCO, Dhia Khaled, received the official membership certificate of the Dahar Geopark in the Global Geoparks Network on Monday. This ceremony was organized by the Global Geoparks Council in the presence of Tunisian representatives from the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy, the National Mining Office, as well as representatives of 11 other geoparks recently integrated into the network in 2026, according to the TAP agency.

A Significant Decision for Tunisia

On this occasion, Dhia Khaled welcomed this important decision for Tunisia, thanking the teams that worked on the file. He also highlighted the role of local actors and civil society, "without whom this project could not have been completed on the ground." This inscription is an international recognition of Tunisia's work to protect its natural and cultural heritage, demonstrating the country's commitment to more sustainable development.

Criteria for UNESCO Recognition

The recognition is based on specific UNESCO criteria, including:

The Dahar Geopark

Located in southern Tunisia, the Dahar Geopark is a territory known for its ancient landscapes, desert reliefs, and unique geological formations. This natural heritage dates back over 250 million years and tells part of the Earth's history.

A First for Tunisia

With this label, Tunisia enters the global geoparks network for the first time, gaining significant international visibility. The Dahar Geopark is the first of its kind in Tunisia and the third on the African continent.
