Tunisian Medical Teams Achieve World-First in Cardiac Surgery
Tunisian medical teams at La Rabta Hospital achieved a major breakthrough in cardiac surgery on Tuesday, performing an ablation by electroporation of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter in a patient equipped with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD, artificial heart) for advanced heart failure, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.
According to the Ministry, this is a world-first. The intervention, which involved treating atrial fibrillation in a patient with a severe heart failure requiring an artificial heart, was successfully carried out.
The operation was performed using the electroporation technique, under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Sami Mourali, Head of the Adult Cardiology Department at La Rabta University Hospital, in collaboration with Professor Sana Ouali and the electrophysiology unit team.
The Ministry hailed this success, which is the result of the joint efforts of medical, paramedical, and pharmaceutical teams, reflecting the excellence of Tunisian expertise in the field of public health.
