Ghana Seeks to Relaunch National Airline with International Partner

The Ghanaian government is seeking to relaunch its national airline, but this time, it does not want to go it alone. In fact, the government is looking for an international strategic partner that could even hold a majority stake in the future airline.

Call for Investors

According to Agence Ecofin, Ghana has launched a call for investors to create a new national airline, with a deadline for submission of bids set for May 29, 2026. Although no specific launch schedule has been announced, the future strategic partner will be required to deploy the necessary equipment quickly to make the airline operational by the first quarter of 2027.

Objective

The objective is to rely on an experienced operator to better manage the airline and avoid the difficulties encountered in the past. This new model is based on a cooperation between the state and the private sector, with the Ghanaian state retaining an important role, but with the main management entrusted to the partner.

Regional Hub

The future carrier is expected to make Accra a regional hub, connecting West Africa to Europe, the Middle East, and America. The launch is planned for around 2027, once the partner is found and the project is finalized.

Background

This project comes after "more than 15 years" without a national airline in Ghana, reports Agence Ecofin. Ghana Airways, created in 1958, had ceased its activities in 2004 due to financial difficulties, followed by Ghana International Airlines, which only operated for a few years after 2005.
