African Startups Raise $102 Million in July 2026
According to Africa: The Big Deal, 44 African startups announced funding rounds exceeding $100,000 in July 2026, totaling $102 million (excluding exits). This makes July a month of low value, but not low activity. The number of companies involved is average for the last 12 months, whereas the amounts were 60% below the average funding for the same period. This is effectively the lowest monthly total since March 2025.
Breakdown of Funding
Of the $102 million, only $25 million came from equity funding rounds, the lowest monthly value since April 2019. The majority of funding came from debt.
Year-to-Date Funding
Since the beginning of the year, African startups have raised $1.46 billion, compared to $2 billion by the end of July 2025. Equity funding reached $921 million, a 9% year-over-year decrease. Debt totaled $529 million, well below the $941 million for the same period last year. Only 241 companies have raised more than $100,000, a figure lower than that of January-July 2025 (302), 2024 (286), and 2023 (300). At least 256 active investors contributed to these funding rounds in 2026, compared to 328 during the same period last year.
Current Trends
For now, 2026 is recording modest performance for African startups. Funders prefer to lend to established companies that can generate predictable revenue to repay, rather than taking equity in younger and riskier companies. Capital is focusing on the most solid players.
