European Parliament Tightens Migration Policy
The European Parliament has validated a significant tightening of the EU's migration policy this week. Two texts have been adopted, creating an official list of "safe countries of origin" (SCO), namely:
- Tunisia
- Morocco
- Egypt
- India
- Bangladesh
- Colombia
- Kosovo
Measures to Accelerate Asylum Processing
Carried by an alliance between the right and far-right, these measures pave the way for deportations to third countries considered safe. The goal is to accelerate the processing of asylum applications deemed unfounded and facilitate the return of individuals from these countries. In concrete terms, the European Union wants to reduce the time it takes to examine files and limit the prolonged presence on its territory of candidates who are unlikely to obtain refugee status.
Controversial Aspects of the New Policy
Another controversial aspect of the new policy is the creation of asylum application processing centers outside the EU, for example in Albania, financed by the Union. This move is expected to have significant implications for migration flows and asylum seekers in the region.
