Digital Payment Continues to Grow in Tunisia in Q1 2026

According to the 16th Bulletin of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), digital payment continues to rise in Tunisia in the first quarter of 2026. The ecosystem is experiencing simultaneous growth in mobile wallets, e-payments, and proximity payments.

Mobile Payment

The national mobile payment label, TunPay, has seen significant progress. Electronic wallets have reached 477,000 active wallets, an increase of 67.1% over the past year. The ecosystem now has 17 approved payment service providers, an increase of 34.5%. The total volume has reached 2.7 million transactions, with a value of 487.6 million dinars. Payments dominate usage, with 57.5% of operations, followed by transfers (16%), cash-in (13.5%), and cash-out (13%). This confirms a shift towards more regular and less cash-centric usage. Two key signals reinforce this dynamic:

  • Payment of school registrations via USSD/wallet
  • Gradual unification of the user experience under the TunPay label

E-Payment

E-commerce is accelerating significantly. E-payment transactions have reached 5.2 million in Q1 2026, an increase of 28.4% over the past year. In terms of value, they have grown even faster, reaching 382.7 million dinars (+34.8%). This difference between volume and value indicates an increase in the average basket size, reflecting larger online purchases and increased trust in digital payment. The number of active merchant sites has also increased by 28.2%, reaching 1,288 platforms, confirming the simultaneous growth of supply and demand.

Digital Payment in Daily Life

POS payments remain the cornerstone of physical electronic payment. They have recorded 11.7 million transactions (+21.4%) for 1.38 billion dinars (+19.7%). The number of terminals has reached approximately 45,000 (+4.4%). The faster growth of volumes than values shows the spread of card payment in everyday transactions: small businesses, cafes, or proximity services. The deployment of the White-EMV project is expected to reinforce this dynamic by improving terminal interoperability and facilitating the use of local and international cards.
