Warning to Tunisians Abroad: IPTV Services Can Pose Legal Risks

Many Tunisians living abroad have made it a habit to subscribe to IPTV services when visiting Tunisia to access numerous TV channels at a significantly lower cost than what they would pay elsewhere. This is particularly true for European football, whose broadcasting rights are highly valued.

The Cost of European Football

In France, for example, it is not possible to watch all European football with a single legal subscription, as the rights are divided among several operators (Canal+, DAZN, beIN Sports, etc.). The total cost can quickly add up to several hundred euros per month, prompting some to turn to illegal alternatives.

Legal Consequences of Using Illegal IPTV Services

However, it is now essential to be cautious, as this practice can expose users to legal risks. In France, users and resellers have recently been fined for using an illegal IPTV service to watch Ligue 1 matches. This is a first in France.

Investigation and Prosecution

The LFP (French Professional Football League) reported a suspected pirate network, and a criminal investigation led to the identification of resellers and the list of buyers. Subscribers were fined between 300 and 400 euros, while resellers will be tried in April.

The Risks Outweigh the Benefits

The appeal of low-cost IPTV services is understandable, given the proliferation of subscriptions and the fragmentation of sports rights. However, it is not worth getting into trouble for a few hundred euros. The legal risks are now too significant to be ignored. It is better to invest in a legal and secure solution than to pay much more in money, time, or judicial hassle for trying to save money in the short term.
