New Approach to Diabetic Foot Care in Public Hospitals

Within public hospitals, multidisciplinary medical teams will now take charge of patients suffering from diabetic foot. The goal is to intervene more quickly, better coordinate services, and reduce the number of amputations to a minimum.
This decision was announced during a working meeting chaired by the Minister of Health, Dr. Mustapha Ferjani, on March 11, 2026. The event brought together specialists from various medical and surgical disciplines, all concerned with complications related to diabetes.
The Ministry recalled that complications from diabetic foot are an emergency and require immediate treatment without refusal or delay. The implementation of a structured therapeutic pathway should allow for rapid orientation and early intervention, thus offering patients better chances of preserving their mobility and quality of life.
The new teams will bring together experts in emergency medicine, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, as well as endocrinology and internal medicine. The idea is to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care, avoiding severe cases that could lead to amputations.
With this device, the Ministry of Health aims to accelerate medical interventions and ensure more effective follow-up for diabetic patients within the Tunisian public healthcare system. This approach is expected to mark a turning point in the fight against severe diabetes complications and improve the quality of care for patients.
