MP Zied El Maher Confirms Submission of Postal Bank Bill
On Monday, July 14, 2025, MP Zied El Maher confirmed on Express FM's Wassim Bel Arbi show that he has officially submitted a bill to create a "postal bank" in Tunisia. The text has been sent to the Finance Committee of the People's Representatives Assembly, which will soon begin a series of weekly hearings, even during the exceptional summer parliamentary session.
Objective: Decongest Traditional Banks
According to MP El Maher, the goal is clear: to decongest traditional banks, which often prioritize commercial logic and are reluctant to grant small loans without heavy guarantees.
Key Features of the Postal Bank
- The initial capital of the postal bank could reach 60 million dinars over 4 years, with possible participation from public banks and enterprises.
- The project aims to:
- Strengthen access to microcredit for artisans and self-employed individuals;
- Offer flexible guarantees based on collateral rather than heavy mortgages;
- Digitize part of the financial services to better reach young people and rural areas.
