Tunisia Prepares Ambitious Water Management Program

In partnership with the World Bank, the Ministry of Agriculture is preparing a program to irrigate 20,000 hectares using treated wastewater, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.

During a workshop on water security, Secretary of State Hamadi El Habib presented a national strategy for managing water resources. He also mentioned a cooperation with Italy to irrigate 11,500 hectares of state-owned land.

Tunisia has 127 wastewater treatment plants producing 292 million cubic meters of treated water, part of which is used to irrigate certain crops and green spaces. 14 million cubic meters are currently used in the agricultural sector, with a program underway to extend its use to summer forage crops.

Hamadi El Habib emphasized that the ministry is committed to ensuring optimal water management, aiming for a balance between supply and demand. He also indicated that the ministry is working towards better water management, particularly through the revision of the Water Code and strengthening legal frameworks.
