Restricted Ministerial Council Meeting Discusses Phosphate Sector Development Plan

A restricted Ministerial Council meeting was held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the Government Palace in Kasbah, under the presidency of Head of Government, Kamel Maddouri, to examine the development plan for the phosphate sector for the period 2025-2030. The objective of this meeting was to assess the current situation of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) and establish strategies to increase production, modernize transportation, and improve phosphate transformation.

Kamel Maddouri highlighted the key role of phosphate in the national economy and emphasized the need for better governance to maximize its contribution to GDP growth and trade balance equilibrium. In line with the orientations of President Kaïs Saïed, the Head of Government advocated for increased coordination between sector actors to optimize production and ensure sustainable exploitation of this essential resource.

He also stressed the importance of technological innovation, exploring new international markets, and respecting environmental standards. The program aims to reach an annual production of 14 million tons by 2030, while developing logistical infrastructure and adopting responsible water resource management policies, with a direct impact on the dynamism of mining regions.

The Council validated several concrete measures, including the establishment of a permanent monitoring mechanism, the rehabilitation of sulfuric acid production units, and increasing their yield. It was also decided to create new industrial facilities specialized in refined phosphates and other chemical derivatives. Furthermore, financial support will be granted to the GCT for the Menzel 2 project, including the creation of units for the production of green ammonia and phosphoric acid.

The entire set of decisions aims to strengthen the sector's competitiveness, ensure sustainable growth, and position Tunisia as a key player in the global phosphate market.
