Tunisia's Tourism Sector Continues to Play a Vital Role in the National Economy

The Tunisian tourism sector continues to play an essential role in the national economy. According to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the gross value added (GVA) of tourism activities in 2023 reached 13,717.9 million Tunisian dinars (TND), representing 9.6% of the national economy.

The total production of tourism-related activities is estimated at 24,717.1 million TND. However, after deducting intermediate consumption, the value added actually generated by the sector reaches 10.2% of the country's total value added. This contribution is calculated based on tourist expenditures and associated tourism production.

However, these figures do not directly reflect the contribution of tourism to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In fact, the measurement only takes into account characteristic tourism industries and excludes other economic activities that indirectly benefit from tourist expenditures, such as wholesale and retail trade.

If we consider only the direct gross value added of tourism (DGVA), which is what the sector directly contributes to the economy, it amounts to 7,118 million TND, representing 5% of national value added. Adding net taxes minus subsidies, the direct Gross Domestic Product of tourism (DGDP) is estimated at 7,317 million TND, or 4.9% of national GDP.
