Food Safety Crackdown in Tunisia
The National Institute for Sanitary Safety of Food Products (INSSPA) has announced the seizure of over 7.6 tons of food products unfit for consumption, in addition to 2,452.5 liters of mineral water and 4,196 food boxes stored or displayed in non-compliant conditions.
Key Seizures
- In Tunis, INSSPA agents carried out the largest seizure, confiscating 5.26 tons of food products and 4,196 assorted boxes removed from the market. The seized products included:
- 3,809 boxes of 800g tomato concentrate, all swollen
- 387 boxes of 400g concentrate, also swollen
- 316.8 kg of harissa
- 1,320 kg of salted olives
- 182 kg of decomposing poultry
- 65 kg of frozen meat and fish
- 170 kg of other contaminated products
- Judicial proceedings were immediately initiated.
Regional Seizures
- In the Kairouan governorate, inspectors seized 1.35 tons of poultry of unknown origin, 170 kg of poorly preserved date paste, and 2,452.5 liters of mineral water exposed to the sun, totaling 1.52 tons of removed products.
- In Gafsa, a clandestine slaughterhouse was dismantled, with 553 kg of poultry meat confiscated.
- In Sidi Bouzid, 270 kg of ready-to-fry potatoes were intercepted, transported at over 25°C instead of the authorized 18°C.
