Independent Journalists in Tunisia Can Now Register as Self-Employed Entrepreneurs
As of Thursday, July 3, 2025, independent journalists in Tunisia can officially register as self-employed entrepreneurs. The profession of journalist has been added to the National Register of Self-Employed Entrepreneurs, allowing eligible independents to obtain a specific card within 15 days of submitting their application.
In practice, any Tunisian independent journalist who meets the conditions set by law can benefit from this status for a period of four years, renewable once for an additional three years, upon simple request. The management of the regime is done entirely online through the National Register of Self-Employed Entrepreneurs. Registered individuals declare their annual turnover – limited to 75,000 dinars – and pay a single contribution.
The self-employed entrepreneur regime is open to any Tunisian national exercising an individual activity in various sectors such as the press, media, craftsmanship, industry, agriculture, commerce, or services.
For the Tunisian Journalists' Union (SNJT), this measure is a significant step forward in improving the economic autonomy of journalists and reducing the precariousness that has affected the sector for several years. The union is inviting professionals concerned to register and is providing them with all the necessary means to complete their procedures.
