Direct Insurance Revenue Surges 13% in H1 2026, Driven by Life and Health Segments

According to the latest indicators from the General Insurance Committee, the cumulative revenue of direct insurance companies in Tunisia reached TND 2,529.2 million by the end of June 2026. This represents a significant increase of TND 291.7 million (or 13%) compared to TND 2,237.5 million recorded in the same period last year.

Life Insurance Leads Market Growth

The life insurance segment was the primary driver of this sector-wide growth, with premiums rising by 19.4% to reach TND 774.2 million. Consequently, life insurance now accounts for 30.6% of the total market share, up from 29% a year earlier.

Non-life insurance also posted solid growth, albeit at a more moderate pace of 10.4%, reaching TND 1,755 million. This expansion was fueled by two key sub-segments:

  • Automobile Insurance: Remains the largest non-life category, generating TND 943.1 million in premiums, a 9.3% increase.
  • Health Insurance: Showed strong acceleration, with premiums reaching TND 400 million, marking a 16.9% surge.

Other non-life segments recorded more contained growth, ranging between 5% and 8%:

  • Fire Insurance: TND 190.9 million
  • Transport Insurance: TND 56.5 million
  • Agricultural Insurance: TND 8 million

Claims Outpace Premium Growth

While premiums grew by 13%, claims payments increased at a faster rate of 15.6%, totaling TND 1,202 million. This spike was notably driven by:

  • Life Insurance: Claims surged by 30.4%.
  • Transport Insurance: Experienced a sharp, albeit occasional, jump of 101.2%.
  • Fire Insurance: Claims rose by 32.6%.

The total number of reported claims approached one million, with 993,194 cases filed, a 4.1% increase year-on-year. The automobile segment accounted for the bulk of this rise, with nearly 195,000 claims filed, representing an 18.8% increase.

From a solvency perspective, the volume of assets mobilized to cover technical provisions crossed the TND 11.7 billion mark, reflecting a 9.4% annual increase.

Strategic Implications for the Tunisian Insurance Market

The accelerated growth in life and health insurance—two segments that remain under-penetrated in Tunisia—presents a significant opportunity for insurtech companies and digital distribution models.

Simultaneously, the faster-than-premium growth in claims is prompting insurance operators to invest more heavily in risk prevention and advanced risk management strategies to maintain profitability and solvency.
