Tunisia's Golden Opportunity in the Data Center and Cloud Sector

Tunisia has a golden chance to become a major player in the data center and cloud sector by aligning its legislation with European standards. This reform could not only effectively protect sensitive data but also attract massive investments in digital infrastructure, stimulating the local and regional economy.

Aligning with European Standards

The goal is clear: to modernize the legal framework for personal data protection by drawing inspiration from the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a European standard that guarantees better information security. In parallel, the aim is to develop sovereign cloud solutions, allowing sensitive data to be hosted on Tunisian soil, and to promote the growth of local infrastructure.

A Growing Global Market

The global data center market is experiencing impressive growth, with a proliferation of projects and investments. By 2025, nearly 1,900 data center projects are expected, representing over $558 billion in investments. By positioning itself in this market, Tunisia could capture a significant share of this development by stimulating digital use in key sectors such as banking, industry, and public services.

Proposed Initiatives

Several initiatives are proposed to achieve this goal:

  • Creation of a special economic zone dedicated to data centers, offering attractive tax and customs incentives for investors
  • Integration of renewable energy into the power supply of data centers
  • Establishment of new international connections, including via underwater cables to Europe and Africa

By seizing this opportunity, Tunisia can become a major hub for data centers and cloud services, driving economic growth and digital transformation in the region.
