New Tunisian-Japanese Cooperation Program Launched to Improve Waste Management in Béja

A new Tunisian-Japanese cooperation program aimed at improving the waste management site in Béja officially kicked off on Monday, according to the Japanese Embassy in Tunisia.

This program falls under the framework of the "Joint Crediting Mechanism" (JCM), which utilizes the innovative "Fukuoka Method" for waste management and pollution control. This Japanese technique has been in use since 1975 and has been developed throughout Japan. Engineers from the National Waste Management Agency (ANGED) are currently undergoing training in Fukuoka, Japan, to learn this unprecedented method and apply it to the waste management site in Béja.

As a reminder, the JCM, established by the Japanese government, aims to facilitate the promotion of cutting-edge decarbonization technologies to achieve the goals of the Paris Accord.

Notably, this initiative in Béja marks the first application of the "Fukuoka Method" within the framework of JCM cooperation.

It is also worth recalling that the Tunisian-Japanese cooperation memorandum was concluded during the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8) held in Tunis in 2022.
