Tunisia Continues to Replace Tunisian Driver's Licenses with Italian Ones

Tarek Bouazizi, Director General of Land Transport at the Ministry of Transport, confirmed that the process of Tunisian driver's licenses with Italian ones is proceeding normally. However, he specified that certain models issued since March 2023, in the format of an insurance card with a encrypted code, can only be replaced once the new convention comes into effect.

Bouazizi made this statement during his intervention at a study day organized by the Parliamentary Academy of the Assembly of People's Representatives, under the auspices of its President Ibrahim Bouderbala, on the draft law approving the mutual recognition of driver's licenses between Tunisia and Italy, signed in Rome at the beginning of the year. Bouazizi highlighted that Tunisia is working to conclude bilateral agreements on mutual recognition in this area to frame services for the Tunisian community abroad, facilitate their integration, particularly in the labor market, and prevent difficulties related to the use of Tunisian driver's licenses abroad.

The agreement between Tunisia and Italy was signed on January 16, 2025. It is worth noting that in January 2024, Italy had proposed a new draft agreement aimed at replacing the one signed on May 7, 2004, in Rome, which remains in force until the application of the new agreement.

Finally, Tarek Bouazizi presented the list of countries that have concluded bilateral agreements with Tunisia on the use and replacement of driver's licenses. These countries include Italy, Syria, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, Yemen, Spain, as well as Monaco, Turkey, Mauritania, and Serbia.
