Tunisia Bans Hair Smoothing Products Containing Glyoxylic Acid
The Tunisian government has prohibited the manufacture, importation, storage, and marketing of hair smoothing products containing glyoxylic acid, due to serious risks to public health.
Background
This decision, published on September 9, 2025, in the Official Journal of the Tunisian Republic (JORT), follows a study by the National Risk Assessment Agency revealing worrying concentrations of this substance in the majority of products available on the market.
Enforcement Measures
In accordance with the consumer protection law, non-compliant products will be seized and destroyed at the expense of suppliers, who must also ensure the complete withdrawal of these items from distribution channels. Any infringement of this ban will result in judicial proceedings and sanctions provided for by law.
