German Business Delegation to Explore Green Hydrogen & Energy Storage Opportunities in Tunisia

In late September, a delegation of German companies will make a strategic stop in Tunisia, following an initial visit to Algeria, to explore emerging opportunities in green hydrogen, Power-to-X, and energy storage.

Spearheaded by the agency energiewaechter GmbH and locally coordinated by the German-Tunisian and German-Algerian chambers of commerce, the tour runs from September 21 to 25. The itinerary culminates in Tunis on September 23 with a business breakfast and a dedicated workshop on consortium structuring and cross-border project financing.

Targeting the Entire Hydrogen Value Chain

German industrial players are casting a wide net across the hydrogen ecosystem. Their interests span:

  • Electrolyzer supply and renewable energy integration
  • Water desalination, a critical prerequisite for sustainable green hydrogen production
  • Transport infrastructure, with strong focus on the engineering of future pipeline networks and associated equipment

On the demand side, several heavy industries are in the crosshairs: chemicals, fertilizers, phosphates, steel, and the rapidly emerging green ammonia sector.

The SoutH2 Corridor: A Strategic Backdrop

This initiative aligns directly with Tunisia’s 2050 energy roadmap, which projects 6 million tonnes of annual hydrogen exports, starting with an initial milestone of 300,000 tonnes by 2030 via the domestic “H₂ Backbone” infrastructure.

Regionally, the planned SoutH2 pipeline—spanning approximately 3,300 kilometers from North Africa to Europe’s industrial heartland—aims for an annual capacity exceeding 4 million tonnes. Notably, the Tunisia-Italy link has already secured the European Commission’s “project of mutual interest” designation in Brussels, unlocking access to EU funding and streamlined permitting.

From Strategic Vision to Bankable Projects

For Tunisian stakeholders, this mission offers a tangible gateway to partnerships in engineering, maintenance, and certification alongside established German industry leaders. However, translating this strategic positioning into bankable projects hinges on substantial, upfront investments in renewable generation and desalination infrastructure. Without these foundational assets, the corridor’s ambitious export vision risks remaining on paper.
