Tunisia's Trade Balance: A Mixed Bag in Q1 2025

According to the latest figures published by the National Institute of Statistics, the country's trade exchanges during the first four months of 2025 reached 20,725.2 million Tunisian dinars (Mtnd) in exports and 28,019.3 Mtnd in imports.

Trade Exchanges with the Outside World

During the same period, Tunisia's exports reached 20,725.2 Mtnd, down from 21,245.2 Mtnd in the first four months of 2024. On the other hand, imports rose to 28,019.3 Mtnd from 25,980 Mtnd in the Same Period of 2024.**

Trade Deficit Widens

As a result of this evolution, the trade deficit widened to -7,294.1 Mtnd, compared to -4,734.8 Mtnd during the same period in 2024. The coverage rate fell to 74% from 81.8% during the same period in 2024.

Breakdown of Trade Deficit by Product Groups

The trade deficit stands at -7,294.1 Mtnd, mainly due to:

  • Energy: -3,683.3 Mtnd
  • Raw materials and semi-finished products: -2,462.2 Mtnd
  • Capital goods: -1,179.6 Mtnd
  • Consumer goods: -602.4 Mtnd

On the other hand, the food group recorded a surplus of 633.3 Mtnd.**

Energy-Related Deficit Narrows

It is worth noting that the trade deficit excluding energy narrowed to -3,610.9 Mtnd, while the energy trade deficit stood at -3,683.3 Mtnd, down from -4,026.3 Mtnd during the same period in 2024.
