Tunisia Added to List of Countries Affected by Trump's New Tariffs
Tunisia has been added to the list of countries affected by the new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Announced on April 2, 2025, this decision is part of a protectionist trade policy aimed at strengthening the American economy. Presented as a major turning point, it risks causing shockwaves in global trade.
As of April 9, Tunisian products exported to the United States will be subject to a 28% tax. The most affected goods are primarily olive oil and dates.
It's worth noting that the American decision targets all foreign products with a minimum of 10% customs duties. The "worst offenders," according to the Trump administration, will face even heavier tariffs.
To justify this decision, President Trump declared, according to Le Monde, that the United States has been "exploited for fifty years" and that it's time to "put [their] people first."
The repercussions won't be limited to Tunisia but will also affect its neighbors. Morocco and Egypt are also on the list, with a 10% rate. Other countries, on the other hand, will face even higher taxes: Madagascar (47%), Laos (48%), and Cambodia (49%).
This new tariff policy risks having major economic consequences, particularly for countries whose economies heavily rely on exports to the United States. It remains to be seen how they will react to these new restrictions.
