National Gene Bank Modernization
The National Gene Bank is pursuing its modernization with the launch of several projects aimed at reducing its energy consumption, strengthening the conservation of genetic resources, and developing scientific research. The institution is notably equipping itself with a solar power plant composed of 200 photovoltaic panels.
Realized as part of the energy transition program for public institutions, with the support of the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME), this project will enable the National Gene Bank to ensure part of its electricity consumption through a photovoltaic installation dedicated to self-energy production.
In parallel, the institution has set up cold rooms maintained at -20 °C to ensure the long-term conservation of seeds and preserve plant genetic resources. The National Gene Bank has also signed a cooperation agreement with the Association of Friends of Birds. This partnership provides for a bird monitoring program and their migration routes, the development of advanced DNA analysis protocols on found dead specimens, as well as the creation of a photographic exhibition dedicated to Tunisian wetlands.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, this exhibition constitutes an educational, scientific, and awareness space intended for students, researchers, and visitors to the National Gene Bank.
