Tunisian Government Addresses Tunisair's Restructuring

The Tunisian government, led by Prime Minister Kamel Maddouri, held a restricted ministerial council meeting on January 31, 2025, to evaluate the situation of the national airline Tunisair and examine a restructuring program.

The objective is to improve the management of public enterprises, optimize their governance, and strengthen their financial viability while enhancing their competitiveness.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Maddouri highlighted the importance of the transportation sector in Tunisia, describing it as strategic and essential for economic and social development. He emphasized Tunisair's central role as a symbol of national sovereignty and its involvement in priority missions, such as repatriating Tunisians from abroad, organizing pilgrimages to Mecca, and evacuating citizens in times of crisis.

The restructuring program aims to modernize and make Tunisair's governance more effective, enabling the airline to regain its financial balance. According to the official statement, the Prime Minister stressed the need to overcome administrative and financial obstacles hindering the company's performance. He called for collective mobilization from all stakeholders to ensure the airline's recovery and strengthen its market position.

The Minister of Transport presented a diagnosis of Tunisair's current situation, highlighting the challenges it faces, including the state of its fleet and its needs for 2025. He also outlined measures to improve the airline's profitability and ensure its financial stability.

Following the discussions, several immediate measures were adopted to guarantee Tunisair's financial commitments, improve the quality of its services, and enhance its competitiveness. However, these measures have not been announced yet.

The Ministry of Transport has been tasked with presenting a detailed restructuring plan before the end of March 2025.
