Green Growth Summit: Promoting a Just and Green Transition in the MENA Region

As part of its efforts to promote a just and green transition in the MENA region, Hivos, an international cooperation organization, will organize the 'Green Growth Summit' in Tunis on April 30, to revitalize North Africa's green ecosystems and support green transition strategies in the region. The flagship event aims to forge impactful partnerships between stakeholders and foster synergies towards concrete commitments.

In the framework of its commitment to supporting the green transition in the region, Hivos will also organize a Green Growth Summit on May 14 in Cairo, Egypt.

The summit will bring together business support organizations, small and medium-sized enterprises, investors, funders, and policymakers to promote and advance green ecosystems and strategies, working towards a just transition in Tunisia and the region. Participation in the summit is by invitation only.

Both the Tunis and Cairo summits will focus on five main axes:

  • Green exports
  • Reducing the risks of green investments
  • Green jobs
  • 'Cluster Champions'
  • Impactful green investments

In Tunis, the Green Growth Summit will present innovative strategies, best practices, and partnerships to advance green economies and investment opportunities through panels such as:

  • The Future is Green: Building a Just and Green Transition in Tunisia – This panel focuses on the vision of a sustainable future for Tunisia, highlighting the need for a just and environmentally respectful transition.
  • Transformed Ecosystems: Unlocking the Power of the Green Economy to Create Future Jobs – How can the green economy stimulate job creation and economic growth in Tunisia, and what is the potential of sustainable industries?
  • It's Time to Act: Seizing Green Investment Opportunities – This panel discusses how to seize and capitalize on current green investment opportunities in Tunisia, explaining how these investments can generate positive environmental and economic outcomes.
  • Green Financing: Innovative Financing Mechanisms for the Green Transition in Tunisia – This panel explores crucial innovative financing mechanisms for the green transition in Tunisia, emphasizing the importance of blended financial solutions to support sustainable initiatives.

In addition to knowledge sharing, the Summit will also offer key stakeholders in Tunisia's green transition the opportunity to collaborate and contribute positively to advancing the green transition. The afternoon is dedicated to several working sessions, ranging from green economy and skills to impactful green investments, urban resilience, and green investments. These sessions will facilitate in-depth discussions between donors and other stakeholders, aiming to generate results, strategies, and policy suggestions for future implementation.

"As unemployment and extreme vulnerability to climate change take hold in North Africa, we cannot afford to ignore the enormous untapped potential of green businesses," notes Noha El Sebaie, Hivos MENA's program manager for green entrepreneurship and employability.

"The Green Growth Summit aims to bring together key stakeholders from the region, foster collaboration, and generate tangible results on these pressing issues. At Hivos, our goal goes beyond job creation and extends to continuous sharing of ideas and discoveries we've collected throughout our programs, as well as exploring potential connections and networking opportunities."

El Sebaie adds that Hivos is committed to supporting North African countries (including Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia) in their transition to a just and green economy, and to redirecting high-risk investments towards green businesses to facilitate their growth.

"We want this summit to mark a step towards building a better and greener future for Tunisia and the region. By bringing together key stakeholders, sharing ideas, and fostering collaboration, we lay the foundations for sustainable growth and impactful change. Together, we embark on a journey towards a more resilient, equitable, and prosperous future."

The Green Growth Summit in Tunisia is organized by Hivos and generously funded by the Greenov'i project of Expertise France, with additional support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment, Impact Europe, and the European Union. The event is implemented by New Silk Roads.
