Tunisian Customs to Launch Online Currency Declaration Service for Expats
The Tunisian Customs Authority is set to launch a new online currency declaration service, primarily targeting Tunisians residing abroad (TRE). This innovation is part of a broader strategy to streamline customs procedures and reduce wait times, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Convenience and Efficiency
According to General Chokri Jebri, spokesperson for the Tunisian Customs Authority, this new application will allow citizens to declare their currencies from the comfort of their own homes, even before boarding, and avoid long queues at the customs desk upon arrival.
Progressive Digitalization
The Tunisian Customs Authority has been accelerating its digital transformation over the past few years. Following the success of the "Rokhsati" application, which enables Tunisians abroad to obtain a vehicle circulation permit without cumbersome administrative procedures, the new "Currency Declaration" feature is added to the range of e-services.
How it Works
Users will be able to fill out an online form, indicate the amounts and currencies being transported (euros, dollars, etc.), and generate a QR code. Upon arrival at the port or airport, a customs officer will scan the code to verify the information, validate the declaration, and issue an official attestation immediately.
Enhanced Financial Transparency
When asked about the objective of this system, General Jebri explained that all data is automatically shared with the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) and relevant financial institutions. The goal is twofold: to facilitate the control of financial flows entering and leaving the territory and to strengthen the traceability of currencies, a measure deemed crucial for preventing smuggling and supporting economic transparency.
Reminder: Declaration Obligation
The customs authority reminds travelers that declaring currencies is mandatory when the amount exceeds the equivalent of 20,000 Tunisian dinars for imported sums or 5,000 dinars for re-exported sums. Failure to comply with these rules exposes travelers to fines and legal proceedings. Even for smaller amounts, it is strongly recommended to declare currencies to justify their origin and benefit from certain tax advantages granted to Tunisians abroad.
Massive Adoption Thanks to Awareness Campaigns
Jebri confirmed that the use of digital customs services has seen a significant surge in recent months, thanks to awareness campaigns organized at ports and even on board ships connecting Tunisia to Europe. Since January 2025, the use of the "Rokhsati" application has become mandatory, encouraging travelers to adopt these digital tools.
"We have recorded a 100% usage rate for certain applications like Rokhsati. The feedback from TRE is very positive, as they save time and avoid long queues," he concluded.
