New EU Border Control System to Launch in November 2024

Starting from November 2024, travelers crossing an external EU border will be required to scan their passport or travel document at a self-service kiosk.

According to the Alliance solidaire des Français de l'étranger, the Entry/Exit System (EES) will capture facial recognition data and fingerprints, which will be updated every three years for multiple trips. This digital process will modernize border management while enhancing security.

The recorded data will include the date, time, entry and exit points, as well as personal information such as names, passport numbers, fingerprints, and photographs of the traveler. In cases of refused entry for a short stay, this decision will also be recorded. This system replaces the manual registration requirement at each entry and exit point of the Schengen area.

The EES aims to prevent irregular immigration while ensuring better traceability of entries and exits through a centralized database. Border guards and other authorities will be able to consult this database to verify the remaining authorized stay duration, while respecting data protection legislation.

In addition to modernizing passport stamping, the EES will facilitate the fight against cross-border crime and terrorism, while guaranteeing the security of European citizens, particularly during health crises. The sharing of information between EU member states will be improved, ensuring more effective border management and better security for travelers.
