Tourism Minister Announces Expected Surge in Djerba Tourism in August
Minister of Tourism Sofiane Tekaya has announced an expected increase in tourism in Djerba this August, praising the collaboration between municipalities, civil society, and professionals to improve the island's cleanliness.
During his visit to Djerba on Monday, August 4, as part of his tour of Médenine, Tekaya highlighted the commitment of tourism stakeholders, who have funded 45 cleaning agents for the entire summer season. These agents will reinforce municipal teams in the face of the growing population and waste.
Tekaya emphasized the need to sustain these efforts and involve citizens more in protecting the environment. He also recalled the importance of the "Djerba Without Plastic" project, which aims to eliminate plastic and promote ecological solutions.
The minister confirmed the resurgence of tourism in August, with an increase in arrivals and overnight stays. He specified that the sector generates up to 50 million dinars per day during peak season, compared to 25-30 million in winter.
During his trip, Tekaya visited the site of a future 35-hectare eco-tourism complex in Ben Guerdane, near Henchir Boukornine, and discussed the diversification of tourism offerings. He also showed interest in the situation of local craftsmanship.
The previous day, Tekaya had inaugurated the International Pottery Festival in Guellala and met with tourism professionals in Zarzis to discuss challenges, including the closure of nearly half of the hotels in the region.
