Times Higher Education Releases Second Edition of Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings
The British monthly publication specializing in higher education, Times Higher Education, has published the second edition of its ranking of the best universities in sub-Saharan Africa.
The ranking takes into account six main indicators: ethical leadership, student engagement, resources and finance, access and equity, student numbers, and impact on Africa.
The ranking still shows a dominance of English-speaking higher education institutions in the region. However, French-speaking Africa is making progress in the ranking. This year, six institutions from the French-speaking region are ranked, which is four more than in the first edition.
Côte d'Ivoire stands out with four institutions in the ranking: the University Institute of Abidjan (ranked 81-100 overall), the Higher School of Management (100+), the International University of Grand-Bassam (100+), and the Polytechnic University of San Pedro (100+).
In French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa, the International Institute of Water and Environmental Engineering in Burkina Faso ranks 61st, followed by the American University of Maryam Abacha in Niger (81-100). These two institutions replace the African Development University (Niger) and the Inter-State School of Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (Senegal).
The University of Johannesburg in South Africa tops the overall African ranking, thanks to its excellent performances in terms of access, equity, as well as resources and finance.
