Seven French Families File Lawsuit Against TikTok, Accusing it of Exposing Teens to Harmful Content
Seven French families have filed a lawsuit against TikTok, accusing the platform of exposing their teenagers to harmful content that led two of them to take their own lives at the age of 15.
The lawsuit alleges that TikTok's algorithm exposed the seven young people to videos promoting suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders.
The families are taking joint legal action before the Créteil judicial court. This is the first group case of its kind in Europe.
The company had previously stated that it takes seriously the issues related to the mental health of children and adolescents. Shou Zi Chew, CEO of the platform since 2021, had previously told American lawmakers that the company had invested in measures to protect young users of the app.
It is worth noting that in Tunisia, the Minister of Justice has ordered the Public Prosecutor to intervene to combat content deemed contrary to moral values on social networks, including TikTok and Instagram.
