Biden Signs Law Requiring Chinese Owner of TikTok to Sell US Operations or Face Ban
Joe Biden has signed a law requiring the Chinese owner of TikTok to sell the social media app's US operations or face a ban, following the Senate's adoption of the legislation.
TikTok is under pressure in the West due to concerns over data security. The app is banned on government phones in the UK, the US, Canada, and New Zealand. European Commission staff are also prohibited from using it on work devices. In India, TikTok and many other Chinese apps were banned in 2020 for national security reasons.
This decision will not go unnoticed by those in the business world, as according to 2024 figures from We Are Social, in partnership with Meltwater, 44.9% of platform users utilize it to search for brands or products.
