On Friday, July 3, 2026, a study day organized by Hélios New Energy's technical experts highlighted the main difficulties Tunisians face in their electricity supply.

Frequent Power Outages

Power outages continue to affect their daily lives, with statistics from STEG (2024) showing that 78% of households experience regular outages, averaging two to three per month, with an average duration of 3.2 hours. These outages occur mainly between June and August, when the electrical network is overloaded, and equipment maintenance and weather conditions exacerbate the situation. This situation illustrates the difficulties Tunisians face in operating their electrical network, resulting in financial losses and encouraging them to seek sustainable alternatives to the traditional electricity supply system.

Consequences of Power Outages

The consequences of power outages go beyond mere discomfort. In the residential sector, damaged equipment during outages results in significant financial losses. The industrial sector is also affected, with decreased productivity, equipment deterioration, and product quality degradation accumulating with each outage.

Tunisia's Renewable Energy Goals

To address this situation, Tunisia has set ambitious targets: 35% of renewable energy by 2030, 50% by 2035, and carbon neutrality by 2050. Achieving these goals requires a crucial technical component: battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Benefits of Battery Energy Storage Systems

These systems offer a twofold benefit. On one hand, they ensure a continuous power supply during outages for both households and industries. On the other hand, they enable the valorization of excess solar energy produced during the day, which is currently wasted or curtailed due to lack of storage capacity, and return it to the grid when demand peaks in the evening.
