Steg Pioneers Tunisia's Energy Transition with Decarbonization Efforts

During today's conference organized by the Industrial Real Estate Agency (AFI) on the challenges of decarbonizing Tunisia's industry, Dhouha Hammou, Head of Renewable Energy Studies at the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (Steg), highlighted Steg's unwavering commitment to the country's energy transition.

Hammou proudly recalled that Steg has been a pioneer in the field of decarbonization for several decades. Dating back to the 1960s, the company inaugurated its first hydraulic power plants, followed by wind farms in the 2000s. The year 2019 marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Tozeur photovoltaic power plant, demonstrating a major breakthrough in renewable energy production.

Steg's energy strategy is fully aligned with the national objectives of increasing energy efficiency by 30%. This goal implies reducing energy intensity, a crucial parameter for the industrial sector. Although significant progress has been made in recent years, Hammou emphasized the need to maintain momentum in a context where energy intensity is experiencing a slight increase.

Beyond its internal efforts, Steg also plays a crucial role in supporting industrial companies in their transition to more sustainable practices. Leveraging its expertise and cutting-edge infrastructure, Steg offers valuable technical and operational support to companies seeking to fully embark on the path of decarbonization.
