NBA Africa Launches Startup Accelerator for African Entrepreneurs

NBA Africa has launched the Triple-Double, a startup accelerator based on the continent, focused on supporting African startups in the sports and creative industries.

Objective

The accelerator, managed by ALX Ventures, aims to support African tech entrepreneurs in the sports and creative industries with mentorship and capital. This initiative is part of the "Digital Transformation with Africa" initiative by President Biden and the African strategy of the US Department of Commerce.

Program Details

  • Ten selected startups will receive mentorship from NBA Africa, ALX, and other stakeholders, providing guidance on product development, business growth, and market strategy.
  • A demo day organized by NBA Africa will take place in New York in September 2024, where participating companies will present their products to a panel of global business leaders.
  • Four winning companies will be selected to receive financial support, mentorship, and the opportunity to work with NBA Africa and the Basketball Africa League on their current and future initiatives on the continent.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, startups must:

  1. Be based in Africa
  2. Align with one of the five startup categories in the sports and creative industries:
    • Event and ticketing management
    • Youth development
    • AI and digital marketing in sports and creative industries
  3. Demonstrate proven demand for their product or service through significant revenue or customer acquisition
  4. Show a demonstrable impact or relevance to the African continent as a whole
