Elon Musk Announces Starlink's Arrival in Madagascar
Elon Musk took to social media platform X to announce that Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet provider, is now available in Madagascar.
For the Malagasy authorities, this marks the beginning of a new era with the complete opening of the telecom market in the country.
Tahina Razafindramalo, Minister of Digital Development, stated in April, upon Starlink's arrival: "This progress was made possible thanks to the Malagasy state, which, to open the sector to competition, allowed all internet access providers wishing to invest in Madagascar to obtain licenses."
The rollout of Starlink's offers has been remarkably swift. The license was obtained on April 29, and just two months later, the service is available throughout the country. In comparison, in other countries like Sierra Leone, the process took twelve months. The authorities of this African country signed the authorization in June 2023, and the service only became available on June 12.
Starlink is currently available in several countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Ireland. In Africa, the provider is available in Nigeria, Rwanda, Mozambique, Kenya, Eswatini, Sierra Leone, and Zambia.
