Green Energy Production Unit Launched in Tunisia
The initial green energy production unit was inaugurated on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the regulated municipal waste landfill in the Oued Laya region, Sousse Governorate, Tunisia. The event was attended by Takeshi Osuga, Ambassador of Japan to Tunisia, and Aïda Robbäna, Director of UN-Habitat Tunisia.
A Fruitful Collaboration
This project is the result of a collaboration between the Tunisian and Japanese governments, implemented by UN-Habitat Tunisia. It is the first pilot installation in Tunisia to generate electricity from waste through biomethane valorization. In addition to this project, UN-Habitat, in partnership with the Japanese government, is also implementing projects for domestic waste and plastic management, as well as recycling in Tunisia.
A Model for Sustainability
By reducing emissions, this project sets a model for sustainability and resilience, serving as an example to stimulate the duplication of such projects in Tunisia and beyond. The conversion of waste into green energy not only reduces emissions but also creates a model of resilience and sustainability that can inspire similar initiatives in Tunisia and elsewhere.
A Commitment to Innovation
This approach demonstrates UN-Habitat Tunisia's determination to find innovative solutions to environmental challenges while promoting sustainable urban development. "This project represents the first step in Tunisia to transform waste into renewable energy. I am delighted and honored to see the implementation of the Tunis Declaration of TICAD 8 in Tunisia, thanks to the collaboration with our trusted partners, including UN-Habitat, the Ministry of Environment, STEG, the Governorate of Sousse, and ANGED," said Takeshi Osuga, Ambassador of Japan to Tunisia.
A Brighter Future Ahead
The participants expressed their conviction that this initiative will stimulate more efforts to promote ecological management in Tunisia and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The use of cutting-edge technologies and the establishment of alliances pave the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for Tunisia and the international community.
