Minister of Agriculture Confirms Sousse Seawater Desalination Station to Launch Next Spring

The Minister of Agriculture, Azzedine Ben Cheikha, has confirmed in a recent statement that the Sousse seawater desalination station, specifically in Sidi Abdelhamid, is expected to come into service next spring.

The station, with a cost of 127.6 million Tunisian dinars (Mtnd), is essential for reinforcing the supply of potable water to the Sahel, Sfax, Kairouan, and rural areas, in order to make up for recurring shortages.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted that the Sfax desalination station, which is already operational, has reduced water supply interruptions in Sousse.

Ben Cheikha also discussed the progress of the Kalaa Kebira dam project, a component of the water transfer project from the North to the capital and coastal regions, and mentioned the global budget of the project with an envelope of 89 Mtnd.

On the same occasion, the Minister also addressed some issues, including the degradation of the Hergla fishing port, heavily impacted by algae accumulation. This has led to the near-total suspension of certain port activities and the almost complete absence of blue fish fishing boats in the Sousse region.
