Tunisian Artisans: Preserving Tradition and Embracing Innovation
They are artisans, proud to be so, with a single ambition: to preserve this precious know-how so it doesn't disappear, while innovating. One thing is certain: Tunisian craftsmanship is not just an industry, but a true Tunisian identity that is being revived. In this spirit, the 3rd edition of Souk El Kahina, organized by the Enda group, will take place from December 25 to 29, 2024, at the Tunis City of Culture.
This highly anticipated event attracts both professionals and the general public. It showcases over 80 artisans, celebrating a rich artisanal heritage while facilitating access to new commercial circuits. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover unique creations, blending tradition and modernity, including pottery, weaving, and agri-food products.
Enda has been supporting these artisans for years with microcredit solutions and training programs to improve their living conditions. Although women face obstacles in the craft industry, they are making their mark. Saloua Nabil Zaki, project manager, emphasizes the importance of including young people and men in this sector.
This edition focuses on the quality of Tunisian products and aims to support artisans in the face of rising raw material costs. Saloua Nabil Zaki declares, "We have intensified our efforts to include men in the craft sector."
Chedia Ben Amor, a ceramicist, focuses on sustainability in his creations. Similarly, Saloua Annabi's work reflects a deep respect for the environment and an unwavering desire to give new life to abandoned materials, proving that every object has a story to tell. Meanwhile, Salma Faleh creates sustainable clothing with Gentle Ties, integrating textile recycling.
It's worth noting that Gentle Ties primarily uses recycled ties and collaborates with artisans to create handmade pieces, incorporating elements of Tunisian identity such as wool weaving. Their slogan perfectly summarizes this approach.
Meriem Bribri celebrates traditional Tunisian textiles, seeking to preserve and celebrate Tunisian cultural identity while inspiring others to discover the richness of living heritage.
Souk El Kahina represents not only an essential commercialization space for these artisans but also a vibrant celebration of Tunisian cultural heritage.
As such, this unmissable event offers a platform where each piece tells a unique story, reflecting the artisans' commitment to their art and community. This means that visitors will have the opportunity to discover unique creations, blending tradition and modernity, including pottery, weaving, and agri-food products.
In other words, come and discover these moving creations and support those who work every day to preserve our cultural heritage.
