New Seawater Desalination Plant Now Operational in Sfax
A new seawater desalination plant is now operational in Sfax, strengthening the water supply for approximately 900,000 inhabitants in the region and its surroundings.
Key Features of the Plant
- The facility produces nearly 100,000 m³ of drinking water per day
- It supports the existing network in an area under high pressure on water resources
Funding and Objectives
The project was funded by a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) worth approximately 800 million Tunisian dinars. This plant aims to secure the water supply, especially during periods of high demand. It also helps to alleviate the pressure on conventional resources and better distribute water to other regions, particularly the Sahel.
Benefits for the Local Population
For the inhabitants of Sfax, this infrastructure arrives in a context marked by water tensions, especially in the summer. The project is part of the efforts of the Sonede to strengthen water security in Tunisia.
