Digital Trade in Africa Sees Significant Growth
According to a report by the Trade Law Centre on digital trade in Africa, published in September 2024, African exports of information and communication technology (ICT) services reached $9.2 billion, representing a 5.4% growth in 2023 compared to the previous year.
Regional Breakdown
North Africa leads the market with $4.49 billion in ICT service exports in 2023, followed by East Africa ($2.05 billion) and Southern Africa ($1.4 billion).
Morocco's Engineering Services on the Rise
Notably, Morocco has seen a remarkable surge in the outsourcing of engineering services, including software development, electronic design, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering, with an annual growth rate of 35% between 2019 and 2022.
Room for Improvement
Despite this momentum, the report informs us that African ICT service exports still only represent 0.85% of the global total.
