Sixteen Innovators from Seven African Countries Selected as Finalists for the 2025 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation

The Royal Academy of Engineering has selected 16 innovators from seven African countries as finalists for the 2025 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, following a record-breaking edition with applications from 30 countries.

Launched in 2014, this prestigious prize aims to stimulate and reward innovation and entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa. Since its creation, it has supported 149 businesses from 22 countries, creating over 28,000 jobs and benefiting 10 million people.

The 2025 finalists offer innovative solutions to environmental, educational, and health challenges. The winner will receive £25,000 (approximately $32,000), three finalists will receive £10,000 (approximately $13,000) each, and the public will award a special "One-to-Watch" prize of £5,000 (approximately $6,500).

  • Autothermo (Uganda): A newborn bracelet transmitting vital data in real-time via an icon system.
  • Community Kitchens Powered by Renewable Energy (Kenya): Community kitchens using clean gas from plastic waste.
  • E-Safiri (Kenya): Development of a national network of electric vehicle charging stations and exchange points.
  • Eco Plastic Wood (Tanzania): Transforming plastic waste into high-quality wood and durable furniture.
  • Eco-Plates (Mozambique): Biodegradable plates made from recycled corn rafles, containing seeds that germinate after use.
  • FarmBot (Togo): An autonomous robot monitoring crop health and detecting pests, with real-time data.
  • FreshPack (Tanzania): A non-electric storage solution inspired by human skin to preserve food freshness.
  • Hybrid Solar Dryers (Kenya): Agricultural dryers using solar energy and biofuels.
  • Mkanda Salama (Tanzania): A postpartum hemorrhage-reducing belt to decrease maternal mortality.
  • Neo Nest (Uganda): A neonatal monitoring device transmitting vital signs to healthcare providers in real-time.
  • Play and Learn Web App (Nigeria): An AI-powered web app developing digital skills with personalized learning paths.
  • Smart Hive Device and Precision Pollination Technology (Kenya): An AI-powered sensor monitoring beehives to prevent colony collapse and optimize pollination.
  • Smart Luku (Tanzania): An intelligent meter enabling tenants to measure and share their electricity consumption.
  • A Sustainable Agro-Tech Solution (Nigeria): Recycling metals to produce affordable agricultural machines.
  • TERP 360 (Kenya): An AI-powered device translating sign language into spoken language in real-time via an app.
