Ministerial Council Meeting Focuses on Ensuring Energy Security and Sovereignty
A ministerial council meeting, chaired by Head of Government Kamel Maddouri, was held on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at the Government Palace in Kasbah. The meeting focused on examining the necessary measures to ensure energy security and strengthen the country's energy sovereignty, within the framework of the national energy strategy by 2035.
The Head of Government announced that Tunisia aims to reach 35% of alternative energy sources by 2030, based on a fair and sustainable energy transition.
The established priorities include:
- Diversifying energy sources
- Encouraging investments, particularly in renewable energies
- Simplifying administrative procedures
The meeting also highlighted innovation as a central lever for developing sustainable energy solutions, particularly through startups. Additionally, measures were considered to modernize public infrastructure, including the installation of smart electric meters and improving energy efficiency in public buildings.
Following the discussions, several key decisions were made:
- Finalization and rapid submission of projects for the Hydrocarbons and Renewable Energy Codes
- Strengthening the financial governance of public enterprises active in the energy sector
- Launching a program to accelerate oil and gas exploration
- Valorizing state-owned land to develop reserves dedicated to renewable energy projects
- Encouraging the production of solar electricity for self-consumption and updating the devices related to the Energy Transition Fund
