Scatec Expands Its Footprint in Tunisia with New Solar Project in Tataouine

Norwegian energy group Scatec is continuing its expansion in Tunisia with a new solar project in the Tataouine region. The company plans to build a 120 MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Remada Ouest, covering an area of approximately 200 hectares. The estimated investment for this project is €80 million, and the facility is expected to generate nearly 260 GWh of electricity annually.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027, with an estimated build period of 15 to 18 months. Consequently, the plant is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2028. Grid connection to the Société Tunisienne de l’Électricité et du Gaz (STEG) will be achieved via a 225 kV overhead line, approximately two kilometers in length. The project is also expected to create local employment opportunities, with 10 to 15 permanent positions announced for the post-commissioning phase.

This new power plant adds to Scatec’s rapidly growing portfolio in Tunisia. In Sidi Bouzid, Scatec is currently developing a second 120 MW PV plant named Sidi Bouzid II. This project represents an investment of approximately €96 million and is expected to produce around 276 GWh per year. It is being developed in equal partnership with Aeolus, a subsidiary of the Japanese trading group Toyota Tsusho.

Scatec has already achieved a significant milestone with the commercial operation of its Sidi Bouzid and Tozeur plants, each with a capacity of 60 MW. These two installations mark Scatec’s first operational solar assets in Tunisia. Their combined annual production is estimated at nearly 288 GWh, with the generated electricity sold to STEG under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).

However, the group’s presence in Tunisia extends beyond photovoltaics. Scatec and Aeolus have also secured a power purchase agreement for a 75 MW wind farm in El Fahs, located in the Zaghouan governorate. With an estimated investment of around €100 million, this project will expand Scatec’s Tunisian portfolio to include a second renewable energy technology.
