Samsung Recalls Over 1.12 Million Electric Cooktops Due to Fire Hazard

Following reports of 250 fires and dozens of injuries, Samsung is recalling more than 1.12 million electric cooktops used for cooking surfaces.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), these built-in cooktops have front-mounted buttons that can be accidentally activated if humans or pets come into contact or unintentionally bump into them.

To date, Samsung has received over 300 reports of unintentional button activation since 2013, and the recalled cooktops have been involved in approximately 250 fires. The commission adds that at least 18 of these fires have caused significant property damage, and seven have resulted in the death of pets.

Furthermore, the CPSC has reported that around 40 injuries have been reported, with eight requiring medical attention.

As a general safety precaution for cooking surfaces and ovens, the commission has added that consumers should never place, leave, or store anything on top of their cooktop when not in use, as these items can catch fire if accidentally activated.
